I have the small KRK's and I guess they are ok but haven't compared them to anything.  I'm not very surprised by your comparison with the others though.

Robert, thank you. Those are exactly the ones I bought. And so far I'm seriously liking them. I typically refuse to go into Guitar Center. But they were the only place in town where I could hear monitors. The kid that showed them to me was uncharacteristically helpful and took $10 off each of them. So I took them home and hooked them up and didn't have to wait for shipping.
