I'm Ron and am 78 years young...Have been playing since I was 29.

Gear: I have a 40+ years old Aria Pro that has such a sweet sound that BB King once tried to buy it from me. Have an '85 Gibson SG, 1973 Fender Telecaster Deluxe that my buddy Kirby(Head tech at Guitar Center, Raleigh, NC) rigged a couple of push/pull pods so that instead of 3 sounds I can get 7. He's also the other guitarist in a band we're starting. Last, but not least is my new edition...an Ibanez 73B semi-hollowbody. It was used but looks new, I have a Fender Mustang amp you use headphones to hear, practice with that or my Fender Frontman...stage amp is a 1972 Fender Deluxe Reverb that Kirby tweaked for me.

Back in the 1990s I was on the Board of the Triangle Blues Society and started the Big Blues Jam we held once a month...they are still going strong to this day! I also hired all the local and national acts we had once a month. I learned more in two years playing at the jams then I did in the previous 20+ years playing in the closet!

I started playing classical but had a friend, Jim Lowry, who was the guitarist for The Occasions...Their biggest hit was "I'm a Girl Watcher." He turned me on to the blues and I haven't looked back since...

I've met and made friends with a lot of musicians over the years...a lot of them are unfortunately gone. I'll chat about them in other posts sometime. I've already been longwinded! LOL

Really look forward to this group and interacting with everyone! I think Robert has a great method of instruction and look forward to my playing going up another notch!

Ron, welcome!  I am Ron and am 75 years old.  As one of the resident gear freaks here I am compelled to state you have a great stable of guitars and amps.  Although I am going to have to look up "Aria Pro"; that's a new one on me.  You also have a very interesting history and story of how you found the blues.  And I am old enough to remember "I'm a Girl Watcher"! 😉

Hey welcome Ron #2! 😀

You have some great stories to tell, keep em coming!

Aria Pro was a common brand in the music stores in Sweden where I grew up. They were "above average quality" back then, I think. I don't know what happened with them after the late 80s, but I didn't see much of them after that.

Welcome on board, Ron. I’ve read your lines with interest and I’m very impressed by your musical past.

Robert is definitely an outstanding player and a wonderful teacher. His songs and his tutorials are inspiring and motivate to keep learning and playing. That’s why I’m here too.

I’m looking forward to hearing you playing sometime. As a late beginner I’m always happy to see and hear good musicians play.

Enjoy learning and playing,

Birgit

I also recommend you follow Birgit's in of maintaining your practice log. Then you can also post videos or audio files of yourselves, and I and others can comment and give you encouraging feedback.

You can create a new topic as your practice log here - https://www.masterguitaracademy.com/forums/practice-logs/

@matonanjin Appreciate it...I am very fortunate to have a friend like Kirby who is an expert "tweaker." He's also a heck of a player! What kind of music do you like to play?

@bluesiline Although I've been playing almost 50 years I still consider myself a beginner and probably will for the rest of my life! LOL There are so many mountains to climb and there's always another mountain. Playing guitar is a life-long learning experience...I've followed some of your posts and you have some great ideas. What kind of music do you like to play?

@matonanjin As a gearhead I'd like to know which order you would put my pedals in. I have a crybaby wah, boss tuner, boss wireless WL-50, switch from the amp and a Maxon distortion pedal. I'm going to put a pedalboard together within the next couple of weeks...Should I leave the amp switcher outside the pedalboard?

I'd go with tuner > wah > distortion but I don't know about the wireless Boss - does the manual tell you? What is the amp switcher?

Ron #2 I never did answer this. But I assumed you understood my not doing so.  Robert gave you an answer and he is, as we all know, exponentially more qualified to answer than I.

Yup. Lots of us here probably fit this description.  I, for one, do.

We haven't heard from you for a while.  How go the studies?

Took no time to learn and memorize Reconsider Blues...now I'm going to work on the Clapton version which has all the elements that Robert gave...he did a good job in covering all the basics that Clapton played...studying what Robert posted is definitely going to speed up my learning the Clapton version!

Ron#2, I’m glad to hear that you enjoy working with Robert’s version of the Reconsidering Blues. It’s one of my favorite songs but definitely too difficult for me.

But since your are playing the song, I would be very happy if you could share a video recording with us?

Then, maybe, I could learn a little bit from you too regarding your way of playing.

Birgit
