YL43 – Minor Blues Licks Solo

Let’s take a look at how to take the Minor Blues Scale Box 1 scale pattern and use it as the framework for a 12 bar blues solo. I am simply playing all the 6 notes in the minor blues scale descending as the starting point for ALL the licks in this solo. For A, I use A minor blues box 1, for D, I use D minor blues box 1, and for E, I use the E minor blues box 1. To make it sound musical, I resolve the licks a bit differently for each of the chords.

What you can learn from this is that a basic scale pattern does not have to be boring. It doesn’t have to sound like a scale run either, if you start and/or end the run in some tasteful way. Learn your scales, learn your scale patterns!
