We saw Chick Corea just once decades ago.  It was with Return to Forever at this intimate little venue here in Omaha called "The Ranch Bowl".  Somehow fittingly, where this Ranch Bowl sat, is now a Walmart.

It was an enjoyable show.  But at the time I had no idea of his genius.  Hard to imagine but I was even more oblivious then than now.  How many musicians has he influenced? Jean-Luc Ponty? How many guitar careers launched? Al Di Meola?

Chick Corea passed away yesterday.

Oh I am deeply saddened by this. I have never mentioned this to anyone online before, but Chick Corea is why I became interested in jazz and fusion. This in turn, made me a more accomplished musician overall. I heard Chick Corea Electric Band in a music sore as a teenager, and my mind was blown. I bought a live album, and listened to it non-stop for weeks. What I heard inspired me more than any other music.

I saw him live once, in Edmonton a few years back. It was great. He was a true genius. He seemed to have no limitations in what he could play. No limits. It's so sad that he is not with us anymore. I OWE HIM so much!

Chick was the headliner event here at our city's annual Jazz and Blues Festival years ago!! Fantastic show..........unfortunately I had to educate everyone including Nancy and her family and friends on Chick Corea but still had to attend alone because everyone else thought his music would just be strange and unappealing but man were they wrong!! So good to share some thoughts in remembrance of a brilliant musician.

I admire his dexterity and his recourses to classical music. Fantastic!

And I really love Chick’s energetic duet (2008) with the Japanese pianist Hiromi.

This is the stuff that got me started on learning deeper. I learned this melody, but it's hard to play!

Here are the boys on a rehearsing session.

300 bpm? Frank Gambale and John Patitucci look really relaxed. Seems they could play even faster .......!?

Robert, your new lesson « Must-know techniques for playing fast blues rock licks – lesson YL19 » fits perfectly with this theme. What a power.

And yes, it’s a must be lesson for all of the very advanced players here at MGA.
