Melody with the 6th interval

What is a 6th interval? It refers to the number of scale steps from the first note to the second note. In the video, you’ll see me play the first 6th on the 12th fret, DB. That’s a 6th, because if you count from D to B, using the G major scale, you’ll see that […]

Some melodies around those chords

How to embellish chords is a very important skill to develop. This makes it possible to get away from just simple strumming, which can get boring pretty quickly. It’s also a great way to “change your thinking” about how to play over chords. You see, when we play this way, the style is similar to […]

Learn a Southern Rock Solo

Here we have a sweet guitar solo in the style of the song Soulshine, by The Allman Brothers. It has a mostly major sound, because the major 3rd is featured in a strong way here. Is this one difficult? Let me know in the forum!

E Major Blues Solo

Major Blues? What’s that? Well, it’s a blues where you use the Major Pentatonic instead of the Minor Pentatonic. What’s the difference and which one should you use? Read on. Angus Young Lick from TNT

Here’s a lick I’ve heard Angus Young play. It’s a pentatonic lick played with a certain pattern. Patterns are good things indeed! Even though AC/DC is more rock than blues, Angus plays blues licks all the time. This one is no different. Try using it over one of gazillion blues jam tracks on this site!

Easy phrasing exercise

Easy blues licks from 1 simple phrase! You can do this. I’m just taking a simple rhythmic phrase in one box, then moving to the next box, and so on. It’s easy!

Mega Blues Scale Runs

One scale to rule them all? The minor blues scale is maybe the most useful scale you will ever find. Why? Because it’s applicable in any situation – even if it doesn’t fit, it’s gonna sound cool! I think of it as the ultimate guitar scale, for that reason. The major scale is probably the […]

Learn a melodic solo in G

Here’s a melodic solo in G major. I’m using a G major 7 arpeggio for the first idea (with an added 6th). I’m also focusing mostly on chord tones, throughout. The last idea is a G major/E minor pentatonic run. The backing track has a 1-6-4-5 progression. Let me know how you like it!

Major & Minor in Blues?

In this live stream, I give you an in-depth look at how to use the Major and the Minor blues scales. These are fantastic scales that you have to know if you want to play the blues. You  will also hear me play a lot in this video… I’m just improvising using those two scales.

Sliding blues chords

Sliding 6ths and 9ths are a great way to play blues rhythm guitar, especially over slow tunes. In this lesson, we’ll do that over a blues in E. There are a few ways you can play these chords, but I think these two voicings are the easiest ones to slide up and down the […]
