Yes, Listening is a Key Practice Element.  Active listening, thinking about the track and how the pieces fit and compliment each other, and then how you might add to it, simple or complex, is Essential.

Active Listening puts you in the groove and mood, and is where you need to be when you start adding notes with the guitar in hand.  Previewing materials until you know every nuance, and every chord change comes naturally, is what you want when you get ready to strike a note.

I've been actively listening to the Killer Intro Jam track, and the tasteful solo sections added by our Members, getting it under my skin so that I have a map in my head and and idea of where I'm going when I want to play.  And then, I have to say it, in my head so it comes out of my hands.  Make no mistake, if you can't say it (the notes you want), you're not going to play it the way you want.

Solo contributors, can I get a witness?

High ho! Brother I totally agree! . Sonic fulfilment can only be achieved with the ears first. It's a meditative process. Firstly absorbing the piece, then processing it with your intuitive creative mind letting it sink into the subconscious and brewing it, sometimes for days. Then there is a "precipitation" as the ideas filter into your consciousness and you feel the inspiration well up within you until it gets to a point of friction or tension. Then you just have to pick up that axe and let it all out! 🙃

I've spent some time Actively Listening to Page's Cm masterpiece, Since I've been Loving You, studio and live versions, and now I've plugged deeply into RR's Killer Intro Lick Cm backing tracks.  So many options and ways to play, and the question that hovers and dominates: How Do I best Serve the Song with my own style and inspiration?     So, I Listen more and wait for the sounds without to spur the sounds within me.  What can I borrow from experience and turn out with my fingers and feel?

Often times the deep Listening is a challenge and a revelation.  So Necessary, So Beautiful when you find your space in the Groove, be it one note or one hundred, multiple chords or a double stop at the right moment.  And yes, it has to start with Listening, Engaged, Active Listening.
